The 2023 NRL Premiership is the longest season ever. It comes off a slightly shorter off-season for representative players who took part in the Rugby League World Cup. The NRL 2023 season starts on 2 March and then 27 rounds and a finals series later, it culminates with the grand final on 1 October. Teams will play 24 matches and each team will also receive 3 byes throughout the regular season.
In 2023 there will also be the debut of a fourth Queensland-based team, the Dolphins. It now takes the total number of teams in the NRL to 17 and is the first time the NRL has added a team since the Gold Coast Titans in 2007.
The Penrith Panthers are the reigning NRL premiers in 2023.

Watch the 2023 NRL season on free-to-air TV
You can watch selected NRL matches in 2023 live and free on the Nine Network and via its streaming service 9Now, but it will be screening ads throughout the game.
The Nine Network will only broadcast 3 matches per round at the start of the season, which will increase to 4 per week as it gets closer to the finals.
This means if you’re a casual NRL fan, you might be able to avoid shelling out for a streaming service. But the Nine Network’s coverage tends to favor recent success and general popularity. So if your team has been sitting on the bottom of the ladder for years, you’ll have to look beyond free-to-air to catch a good number of games.
The Nine Network broadcasts every game of the finals series and has exclusive rights to the grand final and State of Origin series. It is also able to stream the games it shows on replay via 9Now.

Kayo Sports is available on PC, Mac, iOS, and Android devices, Telstra TV, Apple TV, Chromecast, PS4, PS5, and select smart TVs including Hisense, LG, and Samsung.

It includes over 50 sports live and on-demand, plus all the supplementary programming such as chat shows and news. Notably, everything from the Fox League channel is available to watch on replay, live, or in highlights packages.
Watch the 2023 NRL season on Foxtel Now
League fans can stream the 2023 NRL season on Fox League via Foxtel Now. It will show every game of every round live, plus every game of the finals series before the grand final live. There is a 10-day free trial for new users.
To get Fox League on Foxtel Now, you will need the Sport pack as well as the base Essentials pack to access sports content. Consequently, you will pay a minimum of $54 a month to watch NRL. This might seem expensive, but you do get access to entertainment content and not just sports.
Foxtel Now is available on PCs and Macs, mobile devices, Chromecast and AirPlay, PS4, Telstra TV, and the Foxtel Now box.
Instead of streaming via Foxtel Now, you could watch the NRL with a set-top box on Foxtel iQ. It will also show every NRL game like Foxtel Now, but it is a more expensive option, with no free trial. To watch the NRL on Fox League you will need the Sports HD and Foxtel Plus packs, for a combined cost of $74 a month. Again you also get access to entertainment content as well as sport, plus you can watch some content in 4K where available.
